"Political repression of both liberals and Sicilian Separatists is proving ineffective, with both movements moving underground and gaining supporters. What will the Two Sicilies look like after the situation inevitably comes to a head?"
Two Sicilies is a
major power that controls the southern half of the Italian peninsula. It is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the east, south and west. To the north, it borders the
Papal States.
Two Sicilies is the largest and most powerful Italian state and is thus a prime candidate for
Unifying
Italy, which can be formed after
Nationalism has been researched.
If Two Sicilies loses part of the state region of Campania while retaining all of Sicily, it will be renamed Sicily; on the other hand, if it loses part of Sicily while retaining all of Campania, it will be called Naples.
The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies was originally founded as the Kingdom of Sicily following the Norman conquest of the region in the 11th and 12th centuries. Following a revolt at the end of the 13th century, the island of Sicily became a separate kingdom under the Crown of Aragon, and the remaining peninsular kingdom was colloquially known as the Kingdom of Naples, but officially remained the Kingdom of Sicily. In the mid-15th century, this kingdom too came under the control of Aragon, and later Spain.
In the 18th century, the two kingdoms become Austrian possessions briefly, before returning to Spanish dynastic control. The kingdoms remained separate though joined in a personal union until 1816, following the Napoleonic Wars, when they were formally reunited, after over 500 years of separation. The reunited kingdom did not last long, as it was annexed in 1861 to the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont during Italian Unification.
